Stretching: The part of the workout we tend to skip – that is until you learn the hard way that it’s actually the most important few minutes of all.
Yes stretching IS part of the workout too. I like to use dynamic stretches to warm up before I get into my workouts. Taking the time to go through these will go a long way towards warming up the whole body and keeping injuries to a minimum.
Here are a few dynamic stretches you can use before a workout:
Lunge with a Twist: A great way to target the hip flexors and also the quads. Perform each nice and slow and controlled for about ten reps.
Knee Tucks: A great way to stretch the glutes and can be done whilst walking or standing in place. Again aim for about 10 reps on each leg.
Hip Stretch With A Twist: A great stretch for the hips but also important for opening up the shoulders. This is especially good for anyone working at a computer a lot – where the shoulders tend to round forward – this will help to stretch them out before a workout.
Squat Jumps: Hands on the hips or hands on the head. A great way to get the heart rate up and warm up the muscles in the body. Adopt your squat stance and squat down injecting a jump up and landing lightly on the feet.
Dynamic stretches are a far better way to start your workout. It activates all the muscles you will use throughout the workout and warming up using motion enhances muscular performance. Give these a go this week.
